The Congress has repeatedly accused the government of stalling fuel price hikes to gain favor among voters ahead of elections and increasing prices soon after the polls are over.
NEW DELHI, 05 MARCH: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday urged citizens to refuel their cars as the Narendra Modi-led central government will increase petrol prices in five states soon after the assembly elections are over.
The Congress MP wrote on Twitter, “Get your petrol tanks filled quickly. Modi government’s ‘Election’ proposal is about to end soon.” He also used a picture of a petrol pump saying it was “increased” and “coming back soon to fuel stations near you”.

On Friday amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Oil prices rose above $111 a barrel. With Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) bearing the pain of rising crude oil prices, fuel rates for end consumers are likely to rise soon.
A day earlier, Gandhi said the BJP was seeking votes in Uttar Pradesh “on the basis of lies”.
In Pindra, Varanasi, Addressing an election rally, Gandhi said, “I will die but never tell you that I will deposit ₹15 lakh in your bank accounts. I don’t care whether it makes you feel good or bad. I respect you all. It is enough to never lie on your face. (PM Narendra) Modi lies and says he protects Hinduism. No, he protects lies. They talk about Hinduism all over the country. Tell me what is Hinduism? It is nothing but truth. They ask for votes not in the name of Hinduism, but on the basis of lies.”
The seven-phase polling in Uttar Pradesh is set to end on March 7. From March 10, counting of votes will take place.
